"Each Field Guide undergoes intensive training - the learning of the local environment, ecology, the wildlife and Bedouin lore, followed by a period of skills training, including health and safety practices, first aid, off-road driving and guest relations practices."
Jorg Schaffler, Senior Field Guide

Horse Riding

Al Maha is privileged to receive statuesque former racehorses, as well as hardy and surefooted Arabians from the private stables of Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai.

Our Field Guides are happy to arrange rides out into the dunes - but you should have sound equine experience, as riding in the dunes does require reasonable skill. A lunging ring is available, so guides can assess ability and understand the nature of the ride to be conducted. Riding, for less experienced riders, can be done within the paddocks in safety.

Horse Rides are conducted either early morning or late afternoon, to avoid the midday sun. Availability depends on climatic conditions and the seasons. Usually an hour to an hour and a half on horseback is perfect, time enough to get out and put your horse through its paces; or to gently trot or canter through the desert landscape, taking in the whole experience as well as seeing the sites with the help of your guide.

Please note: we provide (compulsory) riding hats. Closed shoes or boots are required and we do not supply other riding clothing, although jeans are satisfactory.
