Wake up early for a dawn display of these majestic birds or see them at sunset for a remarkable exhibition of speed and agility. The falcon is one of the enduring symbols of the region; of critical importance to the survival of nomadic Bedouin traditionally this pastime is still very an integral part of Emirati culture. Dating back more than 2,000 years this unique symbiosis between man and bird has spread throughout the world, the sport of many nobles through history. Al Maha has around a dozen birds, most are especially bred, and crossbred, for their speed, colour and hunting agility, while others are rescued birds, cared for and nursed back to health. An Eagle and a Desert Eagle Owl, native to the UAE and also rescued, are also in residence.
A short drive takes you out to an elevated spot at our falconry, where the falcons are already quietly waiting on their posts. You’ll notice the tiny hoods they wear, which keep their eyes covered and temporarily remove 90 to 95 percent of their senses, keeping them calm and content.
You can enjoy a refreshing drink as each guide discusses the breed and character of their birds, noting that all of our birds are kept ‘wild’, and only through the careful balance of a food-based relationship with their carer do they chose to remain attached. These birds are quite capable of flying off at any time, (and sometime do), but can and will remain successful hunters for the remainder of their lives. We maintain humane, on-site quail and mouse ‘farms’, which ensures disease-free food is always available for them.
The speed and natural killing instinct of each of our birds are beautifully displayed and there are amazing opportunities for close up photographs and the inspections during this incredible experience.
